Mould Inspection in Canada

Mould (or Mold) is defined as a large group of microscopic fungi.  Mould is the spelling that is used most commonly in Canada and other Commonwealth countries; Mold is the spelling in the US.

Mould inspectors use sophisticated equipment and techniques to sample for mould in homes and commercial properties. Typically the samples are then sent to a lab. After the samples are tested and results returned, the mould inspector reviews results with the customer, and makes recommendations.

A normal, thorough mould inspection on an average-size residential home will take around 4-5 hours, including time spent discussing and reviewing sample findings with the customer.

Mould inspections typically start at around $300 and have become the fastest growing market in the real estate industry. Because of the danger that it can pose to humans, mould has been called the "new asbestos" of this decade. A mould inspector service can become a highly-profitable new business, or can add to the success of an existing business. Many states and provinces are considering passing legislation to regulate the mould inspection industry further. Becoming certified now may help grandfather your status as a certified mould inspector in the case of legislation in your area.

Mould inspectors can be certified as CMI, CCMI, and CMR. These abbreviations represent:

CMI - Certified Mould Inspector

CCMI - Certified Commercial Mould Inspector

CMR - Certified Mould Remediator

Students can learn mould inspection online at the Professional Mold Inspection Institute's website.

The courses are valid for certifying mould inspectors in both the US and Canada. Not valid in Texas or Florida, which have special state-based certifications for mold inspectors. Louisiana requires (in addition to the online course) 24 hours of live training (for certification). The Professional Mold Inspection Institute is approved to provide this training.

Students who graduate from the Professional Mold Inspection Institute's mold training course also benefit from belonging to a nationally-recognized non-profit society. There are dozens of mold organizations to choose from, but many are operated by mold labs or schools. Operating for-profit creates a conflict of interest for any national association whose purpose is to protect and educate the public. PMII graduates receive a $149 paid membership in the National Association of Mold Remediators and Inspectors (NAMRI), which is a non-profit organization.

Before you take any mould training, ask: does the school you're considering offer a 30-day money-back guarantee?

We do. That's the PMII difference.
